OVERVIEW

Discover northern Qatar's heritage and landscapes

North of Doha, the landscape slows down and the history deepens. This private five-hour journey leaves the capital behind for Al Zubarah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant archaeological areas anywhere in Qatar.

Once a thriving pearling and trading town connecting Qatar to the Indian Ocean, Arabia and beyond, Al Zubarah was largely destroyed in 1811 and eventually abandoned — leaving its remains to be preserved, almost by accident, beneath the desert sand that gradually covered them. The experience includes a visit to Al Zubarah Fort, a later 20th-century structure that still anchors the area today, followed by time exploring the archaeological site itself, where the outline of an entire 18th- and 19th-century trading town remains visible in the ground. Along the way, the drive north takes in Qatar’s open desert and coastal landscapes — a striking contrast to the Doha skyline you left behind that morning. This is a journey built for anyone genuinely curious about Qatar’s history, archaeology and the quieter, less-visited side of the country.

Itinerary Highlights

01

Journey Beyond Doha

Depart Doha in a private air-conditioned vehicle as the city gives way to open desert and rural landscape. Your guide introduces the geography and history of the regions ahead as the journey north begins.

02

Al Zubarah Fort

Visit Al Zubarah Fort, one of northern Qatar’s most recognisable landmarks. Explore its traditional architecture and learn how it fits into the area’s history as a centre of coastal trade and pearling, with the surrounding landscape offering good opportunities for photographs.

03

Al Zubarah Archaeological Site

Continue to the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, where the remains of a once-thriving trading and pearling settlement still outline streets, buildings and markets beneath the desert sand. Explore the site and learn about the town’s commercial importance and its role in northern Qatar’s history.

04

Northern Heritage Landscapes

Travel through the surrounding northern desert and coastline, with short photography stops where suitable — a genuinely different perspective on Qatar, with open horizons and traditional landscapes far removed from the city.

05

Northern Desert & Coastal Landscapes

Take in sweeping views across northern Qatar’s desert and coastline, with short photography stops along the way depending on the route and time available. It’s a genuinely different landscape from Doha’s urban environment, and a good reminder of just how much of Qatar exists beyond the capital.

06

Journey Toward West Qatar

Continue south and west as the scenery gradually shifts from the north’s coastal desert toward the rockier, more rugged terrain that defines western Qatar.

07

Zekreet

Explore Zekreet, known for its distinctive limestone formations and wide open desert surroundings — a landscape quite unlike anywhere else in the country. Take time to explore the terrain and capture photographs before continuing on.

08

Richard Serra's East-West/West-East

Visit East-West/West-East, Richard Serra’s monumental steel installation set directly into the desert. Four enormous plates stretch across the landscape between limestone formations, deliberately placed here rather than in a gallery so the desert itself becomes part of the artwork.

09

Al Shahaniya & Camel-Racing Heritage

Continue to Al Shahaniya, closely tied to Qatar’s camel-racing tradition. Learn about the sport’s cultural and historical importance, with the chance to see the surrounding racing facilities where operating conditions allow.

10

Western Desert Landscapes

Continue through the open landscapes of western Qatar, with selected photography stops along the way — a final chance to take in the region’s quieter, more rugged scenery before the journey back to Doha.

11

Return to Doha

After a full day covering both northern and western Qatar, begin the return journey to Doha. Exact return timing depends on the group’s pace, road conditions and time spent at each stop along the way.
