West Qatar Tour

Discover the desert landscapes of Zekreet, Richard Serra’s monumental installation and Qatar’s camel-racing heritage on a private journey through western Qatar.

5 Hours · Private · Heritage & Desert Landscapes

OVERVIEW

Discover Western Qatar's heritage and landscapes

West Qatar feels like an entirely different country from Doha — rugged limestone formations, open desert plains, and a working camel-racing track all within a single afternoon’s drive. This private five-hour journey takes you beyond the city to see a side of Qatar most visitors never encounter.

The route leads first to Zekreet, where unusual rock formations rise out of the desert in a landscape quite unlike anywhere else in the country, before continuing to one of Qatar’s most unexpected sights: Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East, four enormous steel plates spanning roughly a kilometre across the desert floor. From there, the journey continues to Al Shahaniya, home to Qatar’s camel-racing heritage, before a final stretch through western Qatar’s open desert landscapes on the way back to Doha. It’s contemporary art, desert scenery and traditional sporting culture, all in one afternoon well off the usual tourist route.

Itinerary Highlights

01

Journey Through West Qatar

Leave Doha behind as the urban landscape gradually gives way to open desert. Along the way, your guide introduces the geography, history and shifting character of western Qatar’s landscape.

02

Zekreet

Explore Zekreet, known for its rugged limestone formations and expansive desert surroundings — a landscape that looks nothing like Qatar’s flatter desert elsewhere. Spend time exploring the terrain and taking photographs before continuing deeper into the western landscape.

03

Richard Serra's East-West/West-East

Visit East-West/West-East, Richard Serra’s monumental steel installation set directly into the desert. Four plates, each standing around 14 metres tall, stretch across a natural corridor between limestone formations — deliberately placed here rather than in a gallery, so the surrounding desert becomes as much a part of the work as the steel itself.

04

Al Shahaniya & Camel Racing Heritage

Continue to Al Shahaniya, closely tied to Qatar’s camel-racing tradition and home to a modern racing track built around a centuries-old sport. Learn about its place in Qatar’s cultural and sporting heritage, with the chance to see the surrounding facilities and take photographs where operating conditions allow.

05

Western Desert Landscapes

Continue through the open landscapes of western Qatar, with stops at selected scenic points along the way. It’s a chance to take in the quieter side of the country — rocky terrain, desert plains and open horizons far removed from Doha’s skyline.
